How to Make an Instagram Ad Without a Designer (Step-by-Step)
You don't need a designer, an agency or expensive software to run an Instagram ad that works. You need a clear goal, one strong message, a good image and a few minutes of focus. This guide walks you through the whole process.
Step 1: Pick one goal for the ad
Most ads fail before anyone sees them, because they try to do everything at once: introduce the brand, list every service, announce a discount and ask people to follow. An ad can only do one job well. Before you write a single word, finish this sentence:
“After seeing this ad, I want the person to…”
Good answers are specific: send me a message, book a first session, visit the shop this weekend, claim the 20% discount. Everything else in the ad should support that single action.
Step 2: Know who the ad is for
“Everyone” is not an audience. Picture one real customer: their age, where they live, what they're struggling with and what they'd like instead. A personal trainer writing for “busy mothers who want to get fit at home in 30 minutes a day” will write a far better ad than one writing for “people who want to be healthy”.
Write down the main problem your customer has and the result they want. Those two lines become the backbone of your ad.
Step 3: Write the hook first
On Instagram, people scroll fast. The first line of your caption and the text on your image decide whether they stop. A good hook does one of these things:
- Names the problem: “Tired of diets you can't stick to?”
- Promises a result: “Your first 5 kg, without giving up pizza.”
- Creates curiosity: “The one mistake that keeps your bakery empty on Mondays.”
- Makes a clear offer: “First haircut −30% for new clients this month.”
Keep it short. If you can't say it in under ten words, it's probably two ideas — pick the stronger one.
Step 4: Write the rest of the caption
After the hook, the caption has three jobs: explain the benefit, remove a doubt and tell people what to do. A simple structure that works for almost any small business:
- Hook — the first line, the one that stops the scroll.
- Benefit — what changes for the customer, in plain words.
- Proof or detail — a result, a review, a guarantee, or what's included.
- Call to action — one clear next step: “Send us a DM”, “Book via the link”, “Visit us on Main Street”.
Tip: write about the customer, not about yourself. “You'll get a plan that fits your schedule” beats “We offer personalised plans” every time.
Step 5: Choose the image
The image is what people see first, so it matters more than any single word. You have three realistic options without a designer:
- Your own photo. A clear, well-lit phone photo of your product, your space or you at work often beats a polished stock image, because it looks real. Shoot near a window, keep the background simple and fill the frame with the subject.
- A stock photo. Fine for a start, but choose images that don't look staged, and avoid the ones every competitor uses.
- An AI-generated image. Useful when you don't have a good photo of the scene you want to show — for example a happy customer using your product. Describe the scene, the mood and the setting clearly.
Step 6: Add text to the image (but not too much)
A short headline on the image helps people understand the ad even if they never read the caption. Follow three rules:
- Use the hook or the offer — not a paragraph.
- Make it readable on a phone: large, bold, high contrast against the background.
- Leave the main subject visible. If the text covers the product or the face, move it.
Step 7: Use the right format
Vertical formats take up more of the screen, which means more attention. For the feed, a vertical 4:5 image is a safe choice; for Stories and Reels, use full-screen vertical 9:16. A square image still works when you want one visual for several platforms. Keep important text away from the very top and bottom edges, where the app places its own buttons and captions.
Step 8: Publish, then test one change
Don't wait for the perfect ad. Publish, look at the results after a few days and change one thing at a time: a different hook, a different image or a different offer. That's how you learn what your customers actually respond to.

Create my first ad →A quick checklist before you publish
- Does the ad have one clear goal?
- Would your ideal customer stop scrolling at the first line?
- Is the benefit about them, not about you?
- Is the image clear and the text readable on a small screen?
- Is there exactly one call to action?
If you can answer yes to all five, your ad is ready — no designer required.
